How Artificial Intelligence Is Improving Educational Opportunities in India

In India, 40 million first-graders cannot recognize a single letter or number. Can AI help close such educational gaps more quickly?

Educational inequality in India can lead to IQ deficits in children, causing them to fall behind their peers.

About 50 million Indian children already perform worse than children of the same age elsewhere even before they start school. Since much of brain development occurs in the first six years, there is a risk of permanent deficits.

A movement supported by artificial intelligence (AI) is helping to address this issue.

“Rocket Learning” as an AI-based solution

Rocket Learning’s vision is to use AI to raise India’s collective IQ through a combination of community, technology, and systemic change. Regardless of background or income, the company aims to provide everyone with equal opportunities for education.

Rocket Learning has its origins in the COVID-19 pandemic. When daycare centers—which are essential for early childhood development—were forced to close, an entire generation was left without the foundational skills needed for future learning.

In 2020, a pilot project was launched in cooperation with the government to enable learning via WhatsApp. The project was so successful that the model became firmly established even after the pandemic ended.

How it works

  • Parents receive daily learning lessons via WhatsApp, which they go through with their child at home.
  • Parents receive feedback from staff and the AI and can exchange ideas with other parents via WhatsApp.
  • The positive feedback from the AI motivates the children. Learning is fun and is no longer a tedious chore.
  • Due to the pandemic, many families were already accustomed to communicating via smartphone. They therefore have easy access to structures that are similar to what they already know.

The Three Pillars of Success

Rocket Learning operates on three levels to ensure holistic, sustainable education:

  1. Parent Empowerment: AI-powered coaching tools for personalized habit-building and WhatsApp peer groups empower parents to actively support their children.
  2. Learning in Daycare Centers: The team provides game-based learning content that encompasses not only reading and math but also social and emotional development. In addition, more than 100.000 staff members have already been trained.
  3. Systemic Change: In cooperation with India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development, Rocket Learning provides data and technical expertise to anchor early childhood development in policy and infrastructure nationwide.

AI as a Driver of Education

At Rocket Learning, artificial intelligence is a tool for democratizing education. Children learn colors, rhymes, numbers, and polite manners on their own, which in turn takes some of the burden off parents. The AI acts as a coach, providing positive feedback to both parents and children. The goal is to transform education and learning from a frustrating experience for many families into a journey filled with a love of discovery, enthusiasm, and motivation.

Measurable Impact of the AI Application

Some figures from the annual Impact Reports:

  • Reach: Over 200 districts in 16 states and union territories (regions of India), reaching 6 million children and parents as well as 400.000 staff members.
  • Effectiveness: Children supported by Rocket Learning consistently outperformed the national average on key indicators in the areas of cognitive skills, pre-math and pre-reading skills, and social-emotional competencies (measured in 2024–2025).
  • Success: Children using Rocket Learning rank in the top 30% of their school class compared to students not using the program.

Rocket Learning demonstrates how the use of existing technologies such as WhatsApp, combined with AI, can bridge a gap in education policy. This helps lay a stronger foundation for children whose potential has previously been limited by their background and contributes to greater social justice.
